Details
A large procession of priests, nuns, and a choir, progress down a cobbled street in Bethlehem on Christmas Day. Ottoman police stand in the road ahead of the procession for crowd control. Huge crowds fill the streets, rooftops, and stairways of the light-colored buildings leading to the streets to watch the procession. Behind the people standing by the street, several people sit on horses or stand in their carriages or wagons to get a view. Camels and donkeys, loaded with packs, rest behind the crowd on the right side of the photograph. A temporary tent is set up along the closest building beside the animals. There are also goats and sheep in the bottom right-hand corner of the photograph. Printed in white ink below the photograph, "Christmas Day at Bethlehem. 347. Noel a Bethleem." Printed in white ink script in the bottom, left-hand corner of the photograph, "American Colony, Jerusalem."
