Details
Gros Horloge, is an astronomical clock installed in a Renaissance arch crossing the Rue du Gros-Horloge, in Rouen, France. The façade represents a golden sun with 24 rays on a starry background. The phases of the moon are shown in the oculus of the upper part of the dial. The week days are shown in an opening at the base of the dial with allegorical subjects for each day of the week. A cobblestone street runs under the arch. To the right of the clock is the Fontaine du Gros Horloge leaning against the Gros-Horloge belfry, which is a stone relief carving of the love between the river god, Alpheus, and the nymph, Arethusa. A painted sign on the window below and to the right of the fountain reads, "Cafe Gros-Horlage." A man stands on the sidewalk between the archway and the fountain looking into a shop window. A sign on the corner post to the left of the archway reads, "Orfevrerie, Joaillerie, Horlogerie," [Goldsmithery, jewellery, watchmaking]. Printed in white ink across the bottom-center of the photograph, "243. Rouen. — La Grosse Horlage. ND Phot."
