Details
God's Providence House, 9 Watergate Street and 11–11A Watergate Row, in Chester, England. The house is built in sandstone and timber framing with plaster panels and a slate roof. It has four stories and a gable overlooking the street. At the street level are shop fronts and, to the right, a set of concrete steps leading up to the row level. Set back at this level is another shop front. Overlooking the street is a Jacobean style railing. Above the row level is a fascia board inscribed "GOD'S PROVIDENCE IS MINE INHERITANCE". In the center of the third story is a central nine-pane casement window, surrounded by timber framing with recessed molded plaster panels. Across the base of the attic story is a row of quatrefoil braces, with a four-pane window in the center. At the sides and above the window is more timber framing with panels similar to those on the third story. At the top of the gable is an elaborately carved bargeboard. The ground-level shop farthest tot he left of the photograph is Barnett, Licensed Dealer in Game. The shop directly below God's Providence House at street level is Harker & Co., R. Gregg, Rope. Brush & Mat Manufacturers. Sheep Nets." The shopkeeper of the brush & mat shop stands in the doorway on the sidewalk by the cobblestone street. The shops on the first floor with legible signs read, "Bread Bake and Confectioners," above the game shop. And "Furniture," above the brush & mat shop. A shield-shaped sign on the side of the support beam of the building on the right side of the photograph reads, "Quellyn Roberts & Co., Wine & Spirit Merchants."
