Details
The doorway into the shrine room at Isurumuniya Temple in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka [then Ceylon], is a doorway into the side of large boulders. A man stands on either side of the door. The man left of the door holds a fan over his face. In the foreground of the photograph is a rock wall. Above the rock wall are stones step up through three terraces to the door. Stones that are carved with a guard are on either side of the stairs at each terrace landing. A carving to the right of the door is of a man seated by a horse head. Carved on the boulder on the right side of the photograph is the Elephant Pont carving. Carved on every other stone of the wall around the second terrace is a dancing dwarf. To the left of the terraces and porches is a path leading to low clay roof with designs formed by different colors of clay tiles. The roofs hangs over a rock wall. To the right and above the roof is a log ladder leading up between two boulders which leads to another ladder to the top of the highest boulder. Between two boulders on the right side of the page is a rock wall. Printed in black ink on the bottom left quadrant, "Skeen & Co 762." Written on a stone in black ink on the bottom right quadrant, "762."
