Details
In a profile photograph, an unidentified man sits on the neck of an elephant and rides as another unidentified man, called a mahout (trainer, keeper), stands under the elephants head holding a goad and looking back over his shoulder at the camera, at a ferry crossing in Sri Lanka [then Ceylon]. A very large chain is around the elephant's neck. Palm trees and a house can be seen across the body of water. A stack of logs is in front of the elephant. Embossed in the lower left -hand corner, "Apothecaries Co Ltd, Photographers, Colombo, Ceylon."
